I don’t think that was ever going to happen. Supposedly they were genuinely shocked when he was fired even though the entire fanbase saw it coming. I was a bigger fran supporter than most people, and it was obvious to even me.

Nothing is ever their fault, or more importantly, their kids fault.
Of course they were shocked. Why the hell would they bring in Isaiah Johnson-Arigue at semester as a transfer then sign Josh Lewis if they knew they were getting fired?

One of the press conferences late in the year a reporter asked about IJA, and Fran said they were putting together a developmental plan for him that they were going to start in June.

Fran was basically done after that Richmond loss. That killed what support men’s basketball had with him in charge. They played a Big Ten home game in front of fewer than 3000 people and they were still confused why he wasn’t the guy to lead the charge.

That's what did it for me. Finally a Big Ten tournament run and he followed it up by coming out uninspired with Richmond controlling the entire game. If it's wasn't going to happen then, it never was.

I'm not sure who you guys are referring to when you say that Iowa beat writers are weird, but in my opinion Scott Dochterman tops that list. Dude is a fucking weirdo. He has big 'I am the smartest guy in the world' energy and I'm not sure he realizes how bad he looks in his interactions with random trolls on twitter. My favorite thing about him is his ardent insistence that he is not an Iowa fan. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a poster here, which I guess would make a ton of sense if you think about it.

Imagine a writer is weird! Such a novel take here! Seems like the Marge stuff is the real story, halo never change!

Fran had some bad fucking luck with the 2020 Tourney canceled and the 2021 Tourney being the only team in history to have to face a team that got a bye. Richmond was just a failure of coaching with a loaded team. That should have been a waltz into the Sweet 16.

What is most telling is that the guy who spent his first 13 years or so at Iowa identifying and developing under the radar gems into All-Americans and First Team All-Big Ten players went on a 2-3 year run of recruiting a ton of dogshit players. It was like the end of Dr. Tom's run in some ways. A bunch of shit players that had no business getting offers from schools like Iowa. Even the good players ended up being mostly damaged goods and haven't done shit since they transfered.

The small exceptions are Sandfort and Koch, but both of those were legacy recruits.
